Is H2S awareness training legally required for Canadian workers?
Yes. Every Canadian jurisdiction - federal, provincial, and territorial - requires employers to train workers on hazardous substances they may encounter, and H2S is listed in every Canadian OEL schedule. Under the Canada Labour Code, Part II (R.S.C. 1985, c. L-2) and the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (SOR/86-304), federally regulated workers must receive hazardous substance training. Provincial equivalents include Alberta's OHS Act (S.A. 2017, c. 23) and Ontario's OHSA (R.S.O. 1990, c. O.1), s.25(2)(a). Workers in any industry where H2S may be present - oil and gas, agriculture, wastewater, confined space entry, or construction - have the right to know about the hazard, participate in controlling it, and refuse work they believe poses a danger.
Why does the smell of H2S disappear even when the gas is still present?
At concentrations between 100 and 150 ppm, H2S causes olfactory fatigue - the receptor cells in your nose become saturated and stop sending signals to your brain, so the rotten-egg smell completely disappears. The gas has not dissipated; your nose has shut down. This is the most dangerous feature of H2S and the pattern in the majority of Canadian H2S fatalities: a worker smells the gas, moves closer to investigate, the smell fades, they assume the hazard has cleared, and then lose consciousness without warning. If you were smelling H2S and the odour stops, assume concentrations have increased to dangerous levels - leave immediately and do not return without supplied-air respiratory protection and atmospheric monitoring.
What are the legal H2S exposure limits in Canada and when must workers evacuate?
Most Canadian jurisdictions adopt the ACGIH Threshold Limit Values as legally enforceable occupational exposure limits: 1 ppm as the 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) and 5 ppm as the 15-minute short-term exposure limit (STEL). These thresholds are set in Alberta's OHS Code Schedule 1 (Alta Reg 87/2009), BC's OHS Regulation Schedule 1 (B.C. Reg. 296/97), Ontario's O. Reg. 833 Table 1, and the Canada OHS Regulations (SOR/86-304). At 5 ppm (STEL), workers must leave the area immediately and not return without controls in place. At 100 ppm - the NIOSH Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) value - SCBA is the only acceptable respirator and emergency response procedures must be activated.
What should I do if a coworker collapses from H2S exposure?
Do not enter the hazard zone without SCBA - this is the absolute rule, and it is non-negotiable. Unprotected bystanders who rush in to help are exposed to the same atmosphere that incapacitated the first worker; multiple-fatality H2S incidents almost always follow this exact pattern. Call 911 immediately, report H2S gas, and activate the site emergency response plan to clear other personnel and prevent additional casualties. Any worker who loses consciousness or experiences significant H2S exposure must receive immediate medical evaluation even if they appear to have recovered - delayed-onset pulmonary edema can develop 12 to 48 hours after the incident, and workers who seemed fine at the scene have died the following day. Under all Canadian OHS Acts, H2S knockdowns are reportable serious incidents requiring formal investigation.
Does a standard N95 or gas-cartridge respirator protect against H2S?
No. Air-purifying respirators - including N95s, half-face masks with gas cartridges, and PAPRs - are not appropriate in any H2S environment where oxygen deficiency is possible, which includes confined spaces, manure storage, sewage systems, and petroleum vessels. These respirators filter the surrounding air but do not add oxygen; if the atmosphere is oxygen-deficient, an APR user will lose consciousness even if the H2S cartridge is working. SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) is required at or above the 100 ppm IDLH and for any rescue entry. The Canadian standard governing respirator selection is CSA Z94.4-18, referenced in Alberta's OHS Code Part 18 and WorkSafeBC's OHS Regulation Part 8; it explicitly requires supplied-air or SCBA whenever oxygen deficiency cannot be ruled out.
