Does this course qualify restoration workers to do asbestos or mould abatement?

No. It builds hazard recognition and stop-work judgment, not legal qualification to abate. Manitoba requires both worker certification and employer registration before asbestos abatement can lawfully be performed, British Columbia requires licensing or certification for abatement contractors, and several other provinces mandate training tied to the risk classification of the task. When a crew identifies presumed or confirmed asbestos, lead, or high-risk mould, the job is the handoff to a qualified specialist, not the abatement itself.

What should a restoration crew do in a pre-1990 building with no asbestos survey?

Treat the material as presumed to contain asbestos until testing says otherwise. This default comes from Quebec's framework, which presumes pre-1990 buildings contain asbestos-containing material until laboratory testing disproves it, and it is the safest rule in every province. Before cutting, breaking, or removing suspect material: stop, report to your supervisor that the material is untested, escalate to a qualified person or asbestos consultant, and wait for clearance, even under client or insurer time pressure.

Who is hazardous materials awareness for restoration workers designed for?

Property restoration and remediation crews: water mitigation, fire and smoke cleanup, sewer backup response, contents restoration, and general disaster-recovery work. Restoration has a different exposure profile than planned renovation because crews are often first into a building before any hazard survey exists, on an emergency timeline, and a single job can present mould, asbestos, lead, and chemical hazards all at once. The course builds the restoration-specific judgment layered on top of general hazard awareness.

Is there a safe exposure level for mould?

No Canadian jurisdiction, federal or provincial, has adopted a numeric airborne spore count as a safe level, unlike asbestos and lead, which both have occupational exposure limits. Assessment instead compares indoor air quality and species against outdoor background for that location and season. The control principle that actually governs every mould job: fix the moisture source before or while remediating, or growth simply recurs. Mould can start growing on wet drywall within 24 to 48 hours of water intrusion.

Does IICRC certification cover the legal requirements for hazmat work?

No. IICRC S500 for water damage restoration and S520 for mould remediation are widely followed, ANSI-accredited industry standards, and valuable professional credentials referenced in insurance and contractor scopes of work. But they are not government regulation, and no Canadian jurisdiction incorporates them into OHS law. IICRC certification does not substitute for jurisdiction-mandated asbestos or lead certification where that applies, such as Manitoba's worker certification and employer registration requirement for asbestos abatement.
