How is hydrovac safety training different from ground disturbance training?
Ground disturbance training covers the broader locate, permit, and damage-prevention process; this course focuses on what changes when the excavation tool is a pressurized water wand and vacuum hose. It covers the equipment-specific hazards a general program does not: pressurized water injection injury, suction entrapment, debris-tank confined-space entry, and truck mechanical hazards including rollover. Workers who need the full locate-and-permit curriculum should complete a dedicated Ground Disturbance Level 2 program in addition to this one.
Is hydrovac operation regulated by name in Canadian OHS law?
Almost nowhere. Alberta is the only jurisdiction whose regulation names hydrovac directly - its OHS Code requires buried facilities to be exposed by hand or hydrovac before mechanical excavation. Everywhere else, hydrovac sits inside general excavation and ground-disturbance rules as the accepted non-mechanical exposure method, with the equipment hazards governed by general machinery, electrical, traffic-control, and confined-space provisions. Federally, COHSR Part III requires underground pipes, cables, and conduits to be marked before excavation begins.
Who should take hydrovac awareness training?
Hydrovac operators, swampers, ground crew, and traffic control personnel who work on or around a hydrovac truck. The hazards it covers - a water stream that can penetrate skin, a suction hose that can trap a limb, a debris tank that can become a confined space - affect everyone near the unit, not just the person holding the wand. Employers must still ensure operators are trained and competent on the specific unit they are assigned.
How close can mechanical equipment dig to a buried utility before hand or vacuum exposure is required?
It varies by province: Alberta, Manitoba, and New Brunswick set 600 mm, Prince Edward Island sets 609 mm, and British Columbia's hand-expose zone is the widest confirmed at 1 metre either side of the locate marks. Because crews move between jurisdictions, this course teaches 1 metre as the conservative default standoff. Within that tolerance zone, only hand digging or vacuum excavation is accepted - backhoes, excavators, and trenchers stay out until the utility is visually exposed.
Does completing this course make someone a certified hydrovac operator?
No. This is an equipment-hazard awareness course, not an operator certification - employers remain responsible for equipment-specific competency on the assigned unit and for site procedures. On passing the final quiz at 80%, learners receive a certificate of completion valid for three years that documents awareness-level training for orientations and employer training records. It does not authorize confined-space entry into a debris tank and does not substitute for a ground-disturbance credential.
